I have grown up as someone who had reasonable drawing skills. From that, I had always assumed that drawing skills equated to being an artist. It wasn’t until much later in life that I realized I’m more creative than artistic. Each represents a similar thing to me. Problem solving. Idea generation.
My artistic skills are directly related to my ability at mechanical aptitude. To me, they are correlative. I don’t see them as different, but part of a great whole. That doesn’t mean that someone with mechanical aptitude will necessarily have artistic ability or strong natural creative ability. Like anything, those areas must be fostered over time, even for those naturally inclined to them.
I have grown to enjoy woodworking, building, problem-solving, and creating. I occasionally paint, draw, and write creatively. But my joy comes from working through a project, developing solutions, understanding it, and arriving at a reasonable conclusion. This drives me creatively and inspires me to keep attempting to create differently—to improve upon what I’ve already done.
